Record number of entries for the “Mathematics – My Passion” competition
6 December 2013
The deadline for entering the “Mathematics – My Passion” competition has passed. 173 schools (111 secondary schools and 62 post-secondary schools) are participating in the fourth year of the competition, whose strategic partner is Ericpol. Over 2800 students (1600 students of secondary schools and 1200 students of post-secondary schools) have been registered.
“We have beaten last year’s record, and even then the number of schools participating in the competition was impressive,” says Andrzej Rychlewicz, PhD, a lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of Łódź University and the initiator of the mathematics contest. “Almost 2500 students from 144 secondary and post-secondary schools in Łódź province took part in last year’s competition, while fewer than 500 students from 36 secondary schools entered the first time. Our competition is the largest such mathematics event in the Łódź Region,” adds doctor Rychlewicz.
“Mathematics – My Passion” is organized as a mathematics contest with several levels of difficulty (3 levels). The winners are given valuable prizes, including laptops, tablets and cameras.
The co-organizers of the competition are: the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of Łódź University, the Righteous Among the Nations Public General Education High School of the University of Łódź, and the Board of Education in Łódź. The patrons of this year’s edition are the Governor of Łódź, Jolanta Chełmińska, the Rector of Łódź University, Professor Włodzimierz Nykiel, PhD, and the Marshal of Łódź province, Witold Stępień. The media patron of the event is TVP Łódź.
Last year the competition also gained a strategic partner – Ericpol, the largest Polish software exporter and the largest IT company in Łódź province. The company is also the sponsor of the Stefan Banach International Prize granted by the Polish Mathematical Society. Support for the “Mathematics – My Passion” initiative is planned for several years ahead, which will guarantee the development of its strong position in the region.
“We support the development of mathematical sciences because we believe that this is the key discipline for the future of the Polish economy. The goal of the ‘Mathematics – My Passion’ competition is to encourage young people to discover their talents,” – emphasizes Paweł Sczerkowski, the Managing Director of Ericpol.
The first stage of the competition begins on December 12, 2013. The final stage is planned for February 2014, and the final gala will take place around the end of February and the beginning of March 2014.
