Mathematics can be exciting
20 March 2015
More than 2200 pupils of lower and upper secondary schools have taken part in the 5th edition of the biggest such competition in the Łódź region “Mathematics My Passion”. The best of them were rewarded on 20th March 2015 during a ceremonial Gala Final event at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Łódź.
The competition is organized jointly by the High School of the University of Łódź, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Łódź and the Department of Education in Łódź. A strategic partner of the competition for the last 3 years has been the company Ericpol.
This year 147 schools (92 lower secondary and 55 upper secondary schools) announced their participation in the mathematics competition. The winners received the Trophies of the Governor of the Łódź Province and the Education Officer of Łódź as well as valuable prizes funded by Ericpol: drones, robots controlled by Smartphone or netbooks. For the second year in a row, the teachers of the pupils who have taken the best places have also been recognised.
– Interest in mathematics is still growing among pupils. It arises from the mandatory secondary-school leaving examination in mathematics and publicizing by the media of the fact that the graduates of exact sciences can earn more than specialists in the arts. – as was confirmed by the mathematics teachers who were in charge of pupils taking part in the competition. – Mathematics teaches logical thinking, and the results of the school-leaving examination in mathematics are taken into account in many degree courses, including the most popular ones, such as computer sciences or medicine. – which is stressed by the pupils that participated in former editions of the competition.
Three years ago the competition received the significant support of Ericpol which is glad to take part in such undertakings and which has for years been in partnership with the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Łódź.
– We create our business, looking forward towards the future. We focus not only on the quality of our services, but also on the quality of work and the potential of our employees. We want to employ the best – and this in turn encourages us to take action long time before we start the recruitment process. Thanks to the participation in initiatives, such as “Mathematics My Passion”, we can have an influence on the shaping of young talents, on paving the way to success for them, on encouraging them to surrender to their passions. I am convinced that we will often hear about them or maybe even meet during a joint big project. – says dr Marek Gajowniczek, Cross-Functional Programmes Director of Ericpol.
The patronage of the competition was accepted by the Governor of the Łódź Province Jolanta Chełmińska, the Marshal of the Łódż Province Witold Stępień and the President of the University of Łódź prof. dr hab. Włodzimierz Nykiel. The co-organizer of the competition in the category of the lower secondary school pupils is also the Education Officer of Łódź, thus the winners of the competition receive points towards enrolment in the upper secondary schools.
The overriding and the long-term objective of this undertaking is the propagation of interest in exact sciences, in particular mathematics, the encouragement to develop oneself and the possibility to test oneself in competition with other talented pupils.
