Ericpol fights digital divide in Szelkow
27 March 2013
50 laptops with internet access and free servicing, together with IT training for Szelkow Commune dwellers – those are the main objectives of the project called “Prevent Digital Divide in Szelkow Area” that is going to be supported by a consortium consisting of Ericpol Sp. z o.o. and NTT System S.A.
The aim of the project is to supply computers with internet access to people who face digital divide due to poverty or disability.
The project beneficiaries will be equipped with free laptop computers. They will also be trained in basic computer skills, the most important office software, e-mail services, and safe use of the internet. Participation in the project is meant to equal people’s chances in accessing information, deepen their knowledge and introduce alternative sources for improvement of participants’ qualifications. The project is a part of the European Regional Development Fund within the e-Inclusion activities. The received grant equals 2 814 142,50 PLN (Polish Zloty).
‘Thanks to this project, our Commune is joining other communes in opening up to the world, developing dynamically and investing in people and modern technology’, said Arnold Grossman, Szelkow Commune Head, during the inauguration press conference.
The project closure is due October 2020. Over the next few months, the Ericpol and NTT Systems consortium is going to focus on establishing the appropriate infrastructure needed to supply the internet to all beneficiaries’ homes.
‘We are currently working on the design of the radio telecommunication network that would enable us to locate radio stations in a way that guarantees maximum internet coverage in the Commune. By midyear, we would like to have installed the first station on the roof of the local school’, says Szymon Nowakowski, Ericpol Project Manager.
The agreement signing ceremony between the Commune and contractors’ representatives was held on 20th February this year. In early March an internet educational platform was launched. The first participants will be able to use the platform after initial training that is planned to be held locally during the second and third quarters of 2013. The project recruitment starts on the 2nd April. Eligible participants are those who live and are registered in the Szelkow Commune. Enrolment is open for those who are on social welfare or hold disability degrees certificates. Participation in the project is free of charge and the results of the recruitment process will be published on the 26th April.
